About

About me

I'm Ash Watt. I'm the CEO of Encoo, an Australian licensed carrier I co-founded in 2012 and still run.

Jason Li and I came up with the idea over a beer at The Sherlock Holmes on Collins Street. We started with calling cards, moved into VoIP, then data, then built our own network.

Work

Encoo runs IP transit, IX peering, NBN backhaul and BNG infrastructure, with POPs around the country, and a number of Australian service providers run on top of our network. Most of my working life is networks, the businesses built on them, and the regulation around them.

Outside work

At home I'm usually building or fixing something: solar and batteries, Home Assistant, woodworking and DIY around the house, a homelab, and running AI models locally.

This site

It's where I put things worth writing down. That covers series on the telco industry, write-ups of projects, and checklists and resources you can use. You can also browse everything by topic.

The fine print

Everything here is my own view, not Encoo's. Nothing here is legal or financial advice.
